What is Econyl® and what makes it so amazing?

.
As the world turns its attention more and more towards making sustainable choices, at DVR we wanted to dive deeper into the exact materials we are using in our products and the positive impact they have. Consumers are becoming more conscious of their purchases and the impact of them and we are proud to be using Econyl.

Our resources are not infinite, and that’s why being able to ‘close the loop’ is so important. Traditionally, there has been a linear model for production: make, use and dispose. Closing the loop aims to make this process circular, using the disposal phase to make a new product.
.

So what exactly is Econyl?

.

DVR Equestrian Sport Training Wear

.

It is a yarn that performs exactly the same as traditional nylon, but it is created from Nylon waste that would otherwise be polluting the planet. Nylon waste might be fishing nets, or textile production scraps that are then transformed into a new yarn with the same characteristics as the raw virgin material.

The material can be recycled and remoulded over and over again. Nylon is a highly stretchable fabric, it is strong and durable, with moisture wicking and heat retention properties too, as well as being UV resistant - making it such a good choice for equestrian wear and the demands we put on our clothes as riders.

.

.

Traditional production of nylon is not an eco-friendly process, requiring large amounts of water and producing vast amounts of nitrous oxide. But, as well as being a solution to waste, for every tonne of Econyl used, we are saving 7 barrels of crude oil, and avoiding creating 57 tonnes of CO2 emissions. In addition, nylon is not biodegradable, and it is currently estimated that up to 40% of man made plastic waste in the ocean is nylon (goodonyou.eco).
